In New Tokyo 2130, there will be a total of 60 implants available to you. You will find them in sections 601 to 660, which are freely accessible. The number of bionic implants that you will be able to get during a campaign is limited. Therefore, to fully understand this limitation, you must take into consideration that the implants are divided into seven categories (A, B, C, D, E, F and G), as follows:

A. Head and brain:

1. Ocular implants: Improve vision with features such as night vision, zoom, and video recording.
2. Auditory implants: Enhance hearing and can filter out unwanted noise.
3. Brain neurointerface: Connects the brain to the network and allows direct access to information.
4. Brain prostheses: Replace damaged parts of the brain or improve cognitive ability.

B. Upper limbs:

5. Hand prostheses: Replace damaged or lost hands with advanced functionality and customizable grasping skills.
6. Arm implants: Improve strength and dexterity, enable superhuman accuracy in movement.

C. Torso:

7. Thoracic implants: Reinforce internal organs and provide extra protection.
8. Bionic spine: Replaces or reinforces the spine, increasing strength and enhancing mobility.
9. Bionic organs: Replaces damaged or deficient internal organs, such as hearts or lungs, improving the lives of people with severe medical conditions.

D. Lower limbs:

10. Leg prostheses: Replace lost or damaged legs, allowing advanced motor skills and the ability to perform at superhuman speeds.
11. Foot implants: Improve balance and agility, with features such as shock absorption.

E. Skin and tissues:

12. Bionic skin: Replaces damaged skin or enhances resistance. May have chameleon-like properties for temporary invisibility.

F. Bone structures:

13. Reinforced skeleton: Strengthens the bone structure, providing extra endurance and protection against damage.

G. Other implants:

14. Special neuroimplants: Provide access to special skills such as telekinesis, mind control or psionic functions.
15. Energy implants: Store and use cybernetic energy to increase strength and speed.

Taking into account this division, throughout a game you can only get a maximum of one implant from each category, without experiencing negative consequences. Therefore, you can have one implant from category A, one from category B, and so on. However, if you wish to do so, you could try to get a second implant from a specific category, but then you might suffer some after-effects, since your body is not prepared to accept so many changes. It could reject the implant, or not accept it at 100% of its capacity, which will inevitably leave some sequelae. This will also happen from the eighth implant onwards. In other words, nothing will happen until the seventh implant, but if you dare to have another one, your body may disagree and reject it.

After years of preparation, David Velasco finally feels ready to make a dream come true: illustrating his own books. Therefore, in addition to featuring illustrations from various artists (some of them already worked with Riq and David in Expeditionary Company), David will also contribute a good number of illustrations himself. Undoubtedly, all of this will help turn New Tokyo 2130 into a truly spectacular gamebook.

Enthusiastic about this idea, David has already begun working on the first illustrations. By way of example, we would like to show you the creation process of Dr. Sora Tatsuhashi. She is a good friend of the protagonist. So, every time we want to get a bionic implant, we will put our life in her hands.

Biography

Dr. Sora Tatsuhashi, born into a family of renowned scientists in the Great Empire of Japan, demonstrated her passion for science and technology from an early age. Inspired by the idea of merging biology with technology to improve people’s lives, Sora dedicated herself to research in the field of cybernetics and advanced biotechnology.

After completing her PhD at Tokyo Imperial University, Dr. Tatsuhashi became a prominent figure in the world of medical research. Her work led her to spearhead pioneering projects in the development of bionic implants and advanced prosthetics that have improved the quality of life for countless people.

In 2115, she founded NeoBioTech Solutions, a clinic specializing in state-of-the-art medical technology, where the most advanced bionic implants are researched and installed. The clinic has become a point of reference for people who wish to improve their lives through technology.

Dr. Sora Tatsuhashi is known for her commitment to ethics and safety in medical technology, as well as her vision of a world where cybernetics and biotechnology can improve people’s lives and overcome human limitations. Her legacy in the field of medical technology has made her a well-respected figure both in the Great Empire of Japan and around the world.

Historical Context
World War III changed the world forever. So much so that, even now, ten years on from the end of it, the consequences of the conflict continue to linger in the cracks of a society in constant decline, and on the brink of planetary extinction. It is the year 2130 and the Great Empire of Japan extends over almost the entire Asian continent, being the world’s leading power. It is right there, in the heart of this vast country, where you have your residence, more specifically in the city of New Tokyo, a megacity of steel, concrete and neon lights.

A Segmented Society
The city of New Tokyo is divided into sharply defined social strata. At the top of the pyramid, the upper echelon of society hides behind fortified walls, living in gleaming skyscrapers with suspended gardens and tailored security. The middle class struggles to maintain its status in futuristic condominiums, while, at the bottom, a massive lower class barely survives in the true heart of the metropolis: a labyrinth of dark alleys and crumbling factories where those in need try to make ends meet to no avail.

Hackers and the fight for Digital Control
Access to information is the most valuable currency in New Tokyo. Hackers lurk in the shadows of the network, battling to take control of information and technology. These digital outlaws hide in clandestine areas of the city, running their operations from secret, maze-like cybercafes. Corporations, ubiquitous throughout the Empire, compete for dominance of technology and information, using their very own hackers to take down their rivals and protect their assets. The streets of New Tokyo are indeed a digital battleground where hackers fight against corporations and puppet governments.

Colonies on Mars and other planets
As Earth withers, humanity has extended its reach to other planets and moons. Mars, Europa and Ganymede are among the colonized locations, where life thrives in conditions that Earth can no longer provide. These colonies are safe havens for those who can afford the journey and life on these distant worlds. However, even in space, tensions and conflicts persist, as the same power dynamics continue to play out in these new territories.

Biotechnology, Cyborgs and Implants
The line between human and machine has become blurred. Biotechnology allows people to enhance their bodies with cybernetic implants, ranging from eyes that can scan web information to robotic limbs that grant superhuman strength. This has given rise to a whole subculture that embraces technology as an extension of humanity. However, this path is far from being risk-free, as some implants can be hacked or corrupted, turning cyborgs into dangerous weapons or slaves in the hands of hackers.

Religions, Fanaticism and the Battle Against Technology
In this fractured world, different religious factions compete to win over followers. Some worship technology as a deity, while others believe it is an abomination that has brought the world to the brink of destruction. The fanatics, known as ‘Techdemons’, engage in violent conflict, with some seeking to dismantle all advanced technology in an attempt to return to a previous era.

Nanomachines and Large Corporations
Nano technology is ever-present in New Tokyo society. These tiny machines can heal wounds, clean air pollution and even alter human genetics. Powerful corporations exert control over the production and distribution of nanomachines. Not surprisingly, they wield more power than governments, manipulating politicians and laws from within the shadows. Their glass and steel towers rise above the city, making their ominous presence apparent.

Japanese Society
In the year 2130, Japanese society has undergone a profound transformation in the post-World War III era under the rule of the Great Empire of Japan, as detailed below:

1. Cultural and Technological Fusion: Japanese society has become a melting pot of cultures and technologies, as the Great Empire of Japan has expanded across much of Asia and into other worlds. Thus, ancient Japanese traditions have merged with foreign influences, creating a unique and diverse culture. Traditional temples stand alongside futuristic skyscrapers, and tea ceremonies coexist with VR pods.

2. Social Hierarchy: The class system in Japan has become even more segmented in this era. Japan’s high society, composed of powerful families and corporate leaders, holds total control over politics and the economy. The middle class struggles to maintain its position, while the lower levels of society often find themselves trapped in poverty and despair. The gap between rich and poor is more pronounced than ever.

3. Cutting-edge Technology: Japan has been at the forefront of new technologies and innovations. Biotechnology and cybernetic implants are commonplace in society. Augmented reality devices and implanted communication systems are part of daily life. Advances in robotics have resulted in a workforce made up of state-of-the-art robots and androids.

4. Education and Training: Education in Japan has evolved to emphasize technological and digital skills. Schools and universities focus on preparing future engineers, programmers, and technologists. Training for hackers and ‘Neoncoders’ (computer security experts) has also increased, as the struggle for digital control is crucial in this society.

5. Space Colonization: Japan has been a major player in the colonization of other worlds, with Mars becoming one of the highlights of Japanese expansion. Large corporations from the country have established colonies on Mars, as well as on other planets and moons, allowing Japanese citizens to migrate to these places in search of a better life.

6. Religion: Spirituality remains an important part of Japanese society, although it has evolved alongside technology. New religions that revere technology as a deity have emerged, while ancient religious traditions have integrated cyber elements. Cyber-spiritual temples offer rituals that blend technology with spirituality.

7. Corporate and Political Control: Japanese megacorporations have absolute control over politics and the economy. Governments are puppets in the hands of these giant companies, which influence legislation and promote policies in their favor. Citizens often feel that they are trapped in a system in which corporations wield more power than governments themselves.

8. Social Challenges: Despite technological advances, Japanese society faces significant challenges. The gap between classes is a source of discontent and protests, and the clash between ‘Techdemons’ and technology worshippers breeds constant tensions within society. The search for solutions to Earth’s resource depletion and the struggle for survival are pressing issues that weigh on everyone.

To sum it all up, Japanese society in the year 2130 has evolved into a world of high technology and complex social dynamics. The fusion of Japanese tradition with cutting-edge technology, along with the influence of mega-corporations, creates a society rich in both contrasts and conflicts, providing a vibrant and fast-paced setting for your adventure.

We are excited to share with you the experimental work of 3D printing artist @Henrycreations. Henry is a huge fan of Expeditionary Company, and when he found out that New Tokyo 2130 was on the way, he decided to do his bit: by designing a six-sided die shaped like a ninja star! The model is still experimental, but he has already given us permission to tell you about it. How thrilling, right? Did you know that in New Tokyo 2130, when your samurai throws a ninja star at an enemy, you’ll roll a 1d6?

And as if having a six-sided die shaped like a shuriken wasn’t cool enough, @Henrycreations has also incorporated a 1d10 into the prototype—placed on the spinning part that makes the ninja star rotate. FYI, the New Tokyo 2130 game system uses both six-sided and ten-sided dice… Lucky for us we don’t use more dice, or Henry might have gone crazy designing it.

The STL file will be available in his Etsy store when the time comes. We hope you love the idea and, like us, can’t wait to roll this dangerous die—which could mean the difference between life and death. Best regards, and see you in the next update on October 30, 2024.
