  • Optional rule change for the Races of Elmuria

Taking into consideration the feedback received from some players, who would like to enjoy more horse racing without being excessively penalized, we consider that it is a wise move to offer an optional rule change. This will lower the difficulty of the game, and make horse racing less strategic. In return, players will be able to enjoy them more, as the current rule limits participation.

The rule appears in section 2460, corresponding to the Races of Elmuria. The change would be as follows:

– Current Text: If a guard participates in a race and does not win, they will automatically lose 1 of their riding skill points forever, so you will have to modify their Individual Character Sheet in that matter.

– New Rule: If a guard participates in a race and comes in last place at the finish line, they will automatically lose 1 of their riding skill points forever, so you will have to modify their Individual Character Sheet in that matter.

We hope you like it!

  • Travelling is NOT that important

In Expeditionary Company, you’ll be managing your caravan trips. The goal is to keep your company afloat, ensuring you have enough funds to survive over the months. However, there’s much more to explore in the books.

You’ll have the chance to embark on individual adventures with your guards, just like in a traditional gamebook. For these, you’ll use the individual character sheet of the guard you select, which is available on our website. These individual side quests can take place in the capital, such as gladiator battles in the Colosseum, horse races, and more. But they can also unfold in the middle of a journey. For example, you may discover and explore ancient ruins along the way or stumble upon an abandoned mine.

In addition to these adventures, you’ll engage in various dealings with clients, which vary with each trip. These interactions will lead to new adventures, provide fresh information, and more.

But there’s an even bigger mission at hand: saving humanity. This overarching story drives the entire game, as we’re in the midst of an Apocalypse and the world is ending. If two years of gameplay pass and you’ve only managed to keep your company alive, the world will come to an end and so will you. To prevent this, you’ll need to uncover hidden secrets during your travels—secrets that will guide your path forward. And in addition to everything else, you can trade, gamble, and experience countless other activities. Travel is just the beginning.

Throughout an Expeditionary Company campaign, we travel, and we travel a lot. But it is worth pondering on the following. Shall we approach it by means of a metaphor?

Imagine you are a cab driver in a city at war. The job is important. Of course it is. Every ride gives you the chance to meet and engage with people that may influence your life. They may have access to goods you need, they may know shelters, they may supply you with weapons, they may actually help you fall in love, forge alliances, get you new jobs outside of the cab. But all of that is just work.

What’s really important in every life? well, life itself, when you are not working: Are you training to stay in shape? Are you looking after your friends, still meeting up for the weekly poker game? You’ll meet people there too! Are you interacting with your colleagues in the car workshop to improve your vehicle? Are you taking your dog out for clandestine dog races? Are you accompanying a buddy of yours to the fights in the secret cellar? Are you taking care of feeding your people? getting weapons? are you indeed collaborating in all kinds of missions with the resistance in the city, to try to alleviate the effects of the war? And moreover, are you doing something to end the war?

Hopefully this metaphor will give you an idea of what it means to travel as you navigate through the pages of the three Expedition Company books. That’s the job… travel escorting your clients, transporting goods (legal or illegal) but, then, there’s your whole life! Don’t waste it! we are relying on you!
